The following rules apply:

  • Fraser must be reviewed before Mackenzie.
  • Laurent must be reviewed immediately before Rideau.
  • Cedar cannot be reviewed first or fifth.
  • Exactly one file must be reviewed between Fraser and Cedar.

D7, G10, K16, P25, V37, ?

5 / 16

Question: Which option most clearly and concisely preserves the meaning of the following sentence?

Applicants who are in possession of incomplete documentation are advised that they will be unable to proceed until such time as all required materials have been received.

6 / 16

A person has requested an update on an application. The request has been received, but the final decision will not necessarily be available this week. A status update can be provided by Friday, 14 August.

Question: Which sentence is clearest and most professional?

7 / 16

A briefing originally scheduled for 10:00 a.m. has been moved to 2:00 p.m. The location remains Room 4. In-person staff should arrive 10 minutes early, while remote staff should use the existing online link.

Question: Which notice communicates all the information most clearly and accurately?

8 / 16

Question: Arrange all the following words to form one complete and grammatically correct sentence:

again / although / accurate / appeared / figures / Nadia / the / them / verified

After arranging the sentence, identify the fourth letter of the word immediately before “again.”

9 / 16

During a discussion in a busy reception area, a client explains that background noise is making it difficult to hear and understand the instructions. A quieter interview space and written instructions are both available.

The client is accompanied by another person but has not asked that person to communicate on their behalf.

Question: Which response would be the most effective?

10 / 16

A client emails to ask whether a submitted request has been approved. The system confirms that all required documents were received, but the assessment is still in progress. The next status update is expected within five business days.

You are not authorized to predict the final decision.

Question: Which response would be the most appropriate?

11 / 16

A service centre normally assists clients in arrival order. A client may be moved ahead only for a confirmed urgent service need or an approved accessibility accommodation.

A client asks to move ahead because a parking meter will expire in 20 minutes. The client has not mentioned an urgent service need or an accessibility requirement.

Question:

Which response would be the most effective?

12 / 16

A client arrives with an appointment-confirmation email, but the appointment does not appear in the local scheduling system. The client has waited for 35 minutes and is speaking firmly because another time-sensitive commitment is approaching.

You can verify the confirmation number and contact the scheduling team, but you cannot guarantee when the client will be served.

Question: Which response would be the most effective?

13 / 16

A document-review team follows these rules:

  • A single formatting error may be corrected locally when the source document is clear.
  • A file must be sent for verification when identity information conflicts across linked documents.
  • A file must be escalated immediately when the conflict affects three or more linked records or when a deadline falls within 24 hours.
  • Review must not continue until an identity conflict has been resolved.

A file lists a date of birth as 4 July 1998, while the linked identification document lists 7 April 1998. Two records are affected, and the service deadline is three business days away.

Question: What should the reviewer do?

14 / 16

A regional operations unit uses the following priority framework:

  • Priority 1: Both time-sensitive and high-impact
  • Priority 2: High-impact but not time-sensitive
  • Priority 3: Time-sensitive but not high-impact
  • Priority 4: Neither time-sensitive nor high-impact

A message is time-sensitive when action is required within 90 minutes or the affected work cannot continue until the issue is resolved.

A message is high-impact when it may affect the accuracy of official records, delay service for five or more clients, or cause a confirmed operational deadline to be missed.

Messages must be classified using only the confirmed information provided.

At 8:20 a.m., the unit receives this message:

A batch-upload report indicates that 18 client records may contain duplicate reference numbers. The affected batch cannot be released, and 14 related client files are now on hold. Confirmation is required by 9:15 a.m. today.

Question: How should the message be classified?

15 / 16

The table summarizes pending files at four regional offices. No files were transferred into these offices during the day.

Office Opening Pending New Files Received Files Completed Files Transferred Out
Halifax 42 18 31 5
Ottawa 36 22 34 2
Regina 28 15 24 4
Victoria 50 12 29 8

An office’s closing pending workload is calculated as:

Opening pending + new files received − files completed − files transferred out

Question: Which office achieved the greatest reduction in its pending workload from opening to closing?

16 / 16

A regional operations unit uses the following priority framework:

  • Priority 1: Both time-sensitive and high-impact
  • Priority 2: High-impact but not time-sensitive
  • Priority 3: Time-sensitive but not high-impact
  • Priority 4: Neither time-sensitive nor high-impact

A message is time-sensitive when action is required within 90 minutes or the affected work cannot continue until the issue is resolved.

A message is high-impact when it may affect the accuracy of official records, delay service for five or more clients, or cause a confirmed operational deadline to be missed.

Messages with a lower priority number must be addressed before messages with a higher priority number.

At 8:35 a.m., the unit receives these three messages:

  • Appointment-system message: The check-in system is unavailable, 11 clients are waiting, and a temporary paper process is adding approximately 15 minutes per client. Technical support requires details by 9:00 a.m.
  • Duplicate-record message: Eighteen client records may contain duplicate reference numbers. Employees can continue processing unrelated files, and confirmation is required by the end of the following business day.
  • Courier-delivery message: A courier requires a signature for an office-chair delivery within 20 minutes. If no one signs, the delivery will be rescheduled without affecting operations.

Question: In which order should the three messages be addressed?

The OTEE Does Not Reward Random Preparation

The OTEE is not a test of how many facts you can memorize. It measures how accurately you can read information, recognize relationships, work through conditions, make professional decisions, and communicate clearly while the clock is running.

That means collecting random practice questions is not enough.

You need structured OTEE practice that trains three things together:

01

Think Accurately

Understand the information, recognize the rule, and avoid unsupported assumptions.

02

Decide Efficiently

Reach the strongest answer without wasting valuable time between similar options.

03

Perform Under Pressure

Maintain concentration and accuracy throughout a long, timed online test.

Our practice system is built

to develop all three.

What Is the CBSA Officer Trainee Entrance Exam?

The Officer Trainee Entrance Exam, commonly called the OTEE, is an online multiple-choice assessment used during the CBSA Border Services Officer trainee selection process.

The official exam contains:

117

Questions

Multiple-choice questions based on hypothetical information and situations.

135

Minutes

Once the official exam begins, it must be completed within the time limit.

4

Competencies

Reasoning Skills, Analytical Thinking, Client Service Orientation, and Writing Skills.

No CBSA Knowledge Required

Reasoning Skills, Analytical Thinking, Client Service Orientation, and Writing Skills.

A successful OTEE result remains valid indefinitely. An unsuccessful result can end the current candidacy and require a one-year wait before another attempt. The content may be hypothetical, but the time pressure and consequences are real. Preparation should be equally serious.

Prepare for Every Competency the CBSA OTEE Measures

A strong overall performance cannot hide a weak competency. Your preparation must cover every area assessed by the OTEE.

01

Reasoning Skills

Learn to draw accurate conclusions from the information provided. Practise patterns, sequences, comparisons, discrepancies, inferences, relationships, and structured problem-solving.

02

Analytical Thinking

Break complex situations into relevant facts. Apply rules and conditions carefully, determine priorities, compare possible outcomes, and select the conclusion best supported by evidence.

03

Client Service Orientation

Evaluate realistic workplace situations and choose responses that demonstrate fairness, professionalism, courtesy, accountability, sound judgement, and practical service.

04

Writing Skills

Improve your ability to communicate clearly and correctly through grammar, punctuation, sentence organization, word choice, editing, plain language, and professional tone.

Each competency requires a different way of thinking. Our focused exams help you practise each one before combining them under full-test pressure.

Practice That Challenges Your Ability, Not Your Memory

Repeating an identical test can make your score look better without making your skills stronger.

Our system is designed to prevent that.

OTEE Practice Test CBSA

OTEE Practice Test FAQ

The Officer Trainee Entrance Exam, or OTEE, is an online assessment used during the Canada Border Services Agency officer trainee selection process. The official OTEE contains 117 multiple-choice questions, must be completed within 135 minutes, and assesses four competencies:

  • Reasoning Skills
  • Analytical Thinking
  • Client Service Orientation
  • Writing Skills

The questions are based on hypothetical information and situations rather than memorized CBSA procedures.

You must achieve at least 60% in each of the four OTEE competencies, not simply a 60% overall average.

A strong score in one competency does not compensate for a score below the required level in another. For greater exam-day confidence, our preparation system encourages candidates to work toward consistent practice scores of 90% or higher before taking the official OTEE.

The difficulty of the OTEE comes from answering questions accurately across four different competencies while working under a strict time limit.

With 117 questions in 135 minutes, candidates have an average of approximately 69 seconds per question. Some questions may take less time, while conditional reasoning, prioritization, and professional judgement questions may require more careful analysis.

The best preparation is not memorizing answers. It is learning to read accurately, control your pace, apply the information provided, and make sound decisions under time pressure.

No. The official OTEE uses hypothetical questions, so applicants do not need prior knowledge of CBSA laws, policies, customs procedures, or internal operations.

The exam assesses your abilities in reasoning, analytical thinking, client service orientation, and writing—not how much CBSA information you have memorized.

Yes. Although you do not need to memorize CBSA policies, structured preparation can help you improve your accuracy, pacing, judgement, and concentration.

A practical OTEE preparation process is to:

  1. Complete a short timed readiness test.
  2. Review every incorrect, unanswered, or uncertain response.
  3. Practise each competency separately.
  4. Use timed retakes to improve consistency.
  5. Complete Mini and Full-Length OTEE Practice Exams under exam-like conditions.

Reading study material can help you understand concepts, but timed OTEE practice is essential for applying those concepts while the clock is running.

If you receive an unsuccessful OTEE result, your current candidacy is terminated. You may reapply and rewrite the OTEE one full year after your initial attempt.

Taking the test again before the waiting period has ended will produce an invalid result and begin a new waiting period from that date. Successful OTEE results remain valid indefinitely.

Because an unsuccessful attempt can delay your application for a full year, candidates should complete realistic timed preparation before starting the official exam.

The Free OTEE Practice Test is a short readiness assessment covering all four OTEE competencies.

It includes:

  • 16 questions
  • A 16-minute time limit
  • Category-balanced questions from a 30-question pool
  • Technical Proctored Mode
  • No account or payment requirement
  • An instant overall score
  • Complete question and answer review
  • A clear explanation for every question

Click Start Free OTEE Test Now to begin immediately. After selecting an answer, you cannot return to the previous question, so review each choice carefully before continuing.

Full Access includes the complete six-exam OTEE preparation system:

  • Full-Length OTEE Practice Exam
  • Mini OTEE Practice Exam
  • Reasoning Skills Practice Exam
  • Analytical Thinking Practice Exam
  • Client Service Orientation Practice Exam
  • Writing Skills Practice Exam

You also receive access to 1,000+ independently developed questions, unlimited retakes for one year, fresh question selections, shuffled answer options, Technical Proctored Mode, post-exam reviews, detailed explanations, and competency results where applicable.

The price is $79 CAD, including applicable tax. No account is required before checkout. After payment, your account is automatically created, and a password-setup email is normally delivered within approximately five minutes.

Technical Proctored Mode places every free and paid practice test in full-screen mode to create a more focused, exam-like environment.

If you leave full-screen mode:

  • The first exit generates a warning.
  • The second exit automatically submits and ends the test.

Our Technical Proctored Mode does not use your webcam or microphone. It uses full-screen enforcement only.

No. Practice tests cannot be paused, and you cannot return to a previous question after submitting an answer.

If a test closes because of a page refresh, internet interruption, power failure, browser closure, or another technical issue, the incomplete attempt is not submitted. You will need to restart that test from the beginning.

This structure helps candidates practise completing the assessment in one continuous sitting, as required by the official OTEE. The official exam must be finished once started.

Paid users can retake the practice exams throughout their one-year access period. Each retake draws another selection of questions from the larger 1,000+ question bank. Answer positions are also shuffled to reduce memorization and encourage genuine reasoning. The question bank is accessed through exams and retakes. It is not displayed as a separate browsable library.

Your results appear immediately after you complete and submit a free or paid practice test.

The results page shows:

  • Your overall correct-answer count
  • Your percentage score
  • Every question loaded in that attempt
  • The answer you selected
  • Correct, incorrect, or unanswered status
  • The correct answer
  • A clear explanation of the reasoning

The Full-Length and Mini Practice Exams also show the percentage achieved in each competency. Competency-specific exams report your performance in the individual competency being tested.

Results are displayed for the current session rather than permanently stored in the dashboard. Paid users may contact support to request an emailed record of a specific attempt.

A desktop computer, laptop, or MacBook with the latest version of Google Chrome is strongly recommended.

The platform may open on other common browsers and devices, but Google Chrome on a desktop-class device is required for the most reliable Technical Proctored Mode and full-screen experience.

Phones and tablets are not recommended for completing timed OTEE practice exams because their browser behaviour may not properly support the required full-screen testing environment.

Eligible candidates are protected by our Pass Guarantee.

To qualify, candidates must complete all six practice exams at least once and complete the Full-Length OTEE Practice Exam at least three times before their first official OTEE attempt during the access period.

Verification requirements, claim deadlines, exclusions, and complete instructions are available on the Pass Guarantee Policy page.
